In August 2007, KEF completed its first inaugural fundraising effort – a charity climb of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The seven volunteer climbers who participated in the seven day charity climb raised just over $30,000 for KEF’s causes through personal, corporate donations and sponsorships.
KEF’s first educational undertaking is targeted at Olturoto, a local village just outside of Mt. Kilimanjaro near the city of Aurusha. Oltoroto is a very poor village where most earn a living farming. The majority of villagers live in mud huts with no electricity or plumbing. Nevertheless, the adults and children are exceptionally warm, genuine, prideful, and happy. Family values are very strong and the parents openly express that they want the best for their children's education.
Olturoto’s entire school stystem was in danger of shutting down because they only had eight outhouses for 969 children and the conditions were becoming unsanitary. KEF is pleased to say that KEF’s first charity climb raised enough money to build a bathroom house for the entire school. Currently construction is underway and should be completed by November.
